Emily Chambers was President of the Southern District No. 1, United Order of Tents and her materials relate primarily to her service in that position. Dr. Zenobia Gilpin was one of few African American female physicians practicing in Richmond in the early 20th century. Her materials relate primarily to her medical practice.

St. James Gilpin was born in Richmond, Va., Dec. 30, 1850 of free parents. He learned the trade of shoe-making from his father and opened a shoe-shop for himself in 1873. Gilpin conducted one of the largest shoe establishments owned by a Black man. Despite existing prejudice, he secured a place on the main thoroughfare of Richmond. He married Miss Cordelia A. Emily (Gilpin) Chambers was the eldest of four daughters born to St. James Gilpin (1851-1934) and Cordelia (Reese) Gilpin (1858-1928). She had five older brothers. St. James Gilpin was a prominent African American business, civic and religious leader in Richmond, Virginia, one of the founders and president of the Richmond Beneficial Insurance Company and a director in the Consolidated Bank and Trust Company. Zenobia G. Gilpin was the youngest child of St. James Gilpin and Cordelia (Reese) Gilpin. She was born in Richmond, Va., and attended Howard University for both her undergraduate and medical degrees.
